About
My name is Becky Townsend and I am a specialist dyslexia teacher with over 20 years experience teaching children in schools and privately. I trained at the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre where their teachers are described as the “crème de la crème” of the dyslexia profession.
Officially my job is to provide one-to-one support to aid personal learning for the dyslexic individual. This really means that I encourage, understand, motivate and enthuse children, as my desire is for all children to achieve their potential and to discover a love of learning.
I have considerable experience in teaching children with a variety of learning profiles including dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia. My work has always required me to work with a range of professionals including Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Therapists.
I have also provided training for staff, and parents, on how to recognise and cater for the needs of pupils with dyslexia and dyscalculia.
Qualifications
BEd (Hons)
RSA Dip SpLD (Level 5)
Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre Dip SpLD (Level 7)
I continue to update my qualifications and experience. I have teachers’ liability insurance, have completed a DBS check and can provide references if required.

Teaching Methods
My aim is to make learning fun and memorable and, above all, to build the confidence of the pupil. I believe that dyslexia is a learning difference, not a disability, and that if all children are taught in a ‘dyslexia-friendly’ way they will all benefit.
The emphasis of my teaching is on using multi-sensory methods, as it is far easier for the child to remember, and understand, information when the hands, eyes, ears and voice work together.
As well as offering support in numeracy and literacy, I believe that study skills are crucial and should be taught from an early age. Time spent helping a young child acquire study skills is never wasted as these, if learned well, will last a lifetime.
I am always keen to liase with the child’s school and I produce a written report twice a year.
